Community Health Workers
What is It?
We are working to establish and grow a group of Rockwood-based Community Health Workers (CHW’s). CHW’s assist individuals and communities to adopt behaviors that lead to better health, greater educational attainment, more engaged citizens, less criminal justice system involvement, and even better employment and financial outcomes. Our CHW’s conduct outreach on behalf of health organizations, or foundations, or school systems to implement programs in the community that promote, maintain, and improve individual and community vitality. They also provide information on available resources, provide social support and informal counseling, advocate for individuals and community needs, and provide services such as healthy food demonstrations, first aid and blood pressure screening. They are always on the lookout for community assets that can be put to work to benefit everyone.
What are some projects that they have worked on recently?
- Encouraged local corner store retailers carry healthier food options
- Hosted students walking the neighborhood at Knocks 2014
- Outreach for school
- Helped a local clinic do blood pressure screening
Do you know someone who lives in Rockwood who would like to become a CHW? We would love to help him or her learn more about Community Health work.
